To expand A2 vocabulary, organise expressions by task: request a product, ask about opening times, explain a problem or confirm information. Learning only object names leaves out verbs and questions that make conversation possible. Choose a situation, practise a sentence, and change one detail so you can use it again.
This guide provides a small editorial selection of expressions rather than an official compulsory list. The original examples help you create personal variants. Learn the likely reply and a clarification question too. Starting a conversation is useful, but prepare for the next moment when the other person replies with information you still need to understand.
Confirmed by official source
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
A simple structure is Queria + product + por favor. Add quantity or size when needed. Queria dois pães, por favor lets you replace dois pães with um café or meio quilo de maçãs. Learn those combinations as complete phrases and say them in context so that the noun remains connected to the request.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
Cliente: Bom dia. Queria dois pães, por favor.
Funcionário: É para levar?
Cliente: Sim, é para levar. Quanto é ao todo?
Troque o produto e a quantidade. Faça depois uma pergunta sobre o preço.
Solution and explanation: shopping
In the dialogue, the customer wants takeaway bread and asks for the total. For practice, change product and quantity while keeping the request clear. Then ask someone to reply with a new price. If you missed the answer, use Pode repetir o preço? The examples do not establish payment rules or policies for a real shop.
Appointments: availability and changing the time
Combine Gostaria de marcar with the specific activity and ask Tem disponibilidade na sexta-feira? To change an appointment, use Não posso ir nesse dia. É possível mudar para segunda-feira? These phrases explain intention and difficulty without requiring a long story. Afterwards confirm day and time, since requesting a change does not mean it has already been accepted.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
Funcionário: Temos uma hora na sexta-feira de manhã.
Você só pode ir à tarde.
Como explica a dificuldade e pergunta por outra hora?
Solution and explanation: appointments
In the exercise, your reply should say that morning is unsuitable and ask for an afternoon option. One variant is De manhã não posso. Tem alguma hora à tarde? The dialogue is fictional. It does not claim that a slot exists or that a service accepts telephone bookings. Use it only to practise asking and confirming.
Transport: destination, direction and location
Begin with Onde fica a paragem? and Este autocarro vai para a estação? These are different questions: the first asks for a location and the second confirms a destination. Add Onde devo sair? to find the stop where you should get off. Learning these three functions helps adapt a conversation when you know the destination but not the route.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
Passageiro: Este autocarro vai para a estação?
Outra pessoa: Sim. Deve sair na próxima paragem.
Onde deve sair? Troque o destino e peça uma nova indicação.
Solution and explanation: transport
In the dialogue, sair na próxima paragem means getting off at the following stop rather than staying until the end. For practice, change estação to centro or biblioteca and request a different instruction. Draw the route and explain what you would do. During real travel, confirm the destination using current operator information; this example describes no existing route.
A phrase notebook with possible replies
Create four columns: situation, my sentence, possible reply and clarification question. A shop entry might combine Queria um café, É para aqui? and Pode repetir? Do not collect dozens of phrases without trying them. Choose a few expressions and produce two variants of each, connected to situations you actually want to practise.
Review a phrase after using it in conversation or an exercise. Mark what you could say without reading and what you failed to understand in the reply. That difference guides the next session. If the request comes easily, practise responses instead of collecting more conversation openings. The notebook should support interaction rather than become a list you never use.
Pair practice: change one detail at a time
Choose a dialogue and try the first version with the text visible. Then hide it and change only one detail: product, day or destination. The other person replies with a small variation. Finish by confirming what you understood. If the conversation stops, request repetition and continue; you do not need to restart everything because you missed one word.
These tasks support everyday situations and do not promise a CIPLE grade. For more structured spoken interaction practice, use our dialogue guide and the official exam page. Use the A2 trainer to revisit vocabulary. Record one expression that worked and one reply you need to hear again during your next session.
