CIPLE A2: Portuguese evidence and available choices
CIPLE certifies A2 Portuguese. It tests reading, writing, listening and spoken interaction; it is not the new cultural and civic knowledge assessment.
Oldest dependency check:
Short answer
If you need language certification, first identify the procedure where you will use it. Permanent residence and nationality have different legal bases. Do not book CIPLE simply because you heard of a new “citizenship test”.
CIPLE corresponds to CEFR level A2.
Last checked:Nationality and permanent residence are distinct procedures under different authorities and legal bases; evidence accepted for one should not automatically be assumed to satisfy every requirement of the other.
Last checked:How to assess readiness
Use CAPLE’s official samples and practise every skill. Multiple-choice civic questions do not replace listening, writing or conversation. Prepare language using materials suited to the level and your circumstances.
CIPLE assesses reading and writing in a 1h15 block (45%), listening in 30 minutes (30%), and spoken production/interaction in about 15 minutes per pair (25%).
Last checked:Registration and alternatives
Open CAPLE’s page for dates and centres. For permanent residence, also compare certificates accepted by AIMA. For nationality, check current conditions and how they interact with the new knowledge requirements before concluding that the certificate is sufficient.
CIPLE registration is handled through CAPLE's registration link and published LAPE exam centres.
Last checked:Portuguese as a Host Language certification at A2 or above is accepted as language evidence for permanent residence.
Last checked:The Regulation lists school certificates, a language test, a Portuguese-as-a-foreign-language certificate, A2/PLA training and specified qualifications as ways to prove Portuguese knowledge.
Last checked:PaN has its own information
Check IAVE for PaN availability and fees. Do not transfer these rules to CIPLE or to the broader knowledge assessment.
IAVE's PaN proves Portuguese-language knowledge for nationality; it is not officially presented as the format of the broader new 2026 civic knowledge assessment.
Last checked:IAVE says it does not expect to hold PaN through the end of 2026 and will publish information about the next sitting later.
