Short answer

There is a difference between statutory requirements and an operational examination. Our exercise helps you study primary sources; it does not replace certification or reproduce State questions.

Confirmed by official source

General naturalisation requires sufficient knowledge of Portuguese language and culture, national history and symbols, plus fundamental rights and duties and the political organisation of the Portuguese State.

Start with your circumstances

Identify whether you are applying through residence, descent, marriage or another route. Also check whether your application was pending when the reform took effect. Then compare requirements. “Who needs it” explains why general naturalisation does not describe every case.

Confirmed by official source

Article 6(1) governs general naturalisation. The law also refers grandchildren of Portuguese citizens (Article 1(3)) and certain naturalisation routes to knowledge requirements. One rule cannot be applied to every route.

How to study while details are missing

Study democratic history, national symbols and the role of sovereign bodies. Read the explanation and open the source after each answer: the aim is understanding rather than memorising a supposed official list. Language deserves separate preparation and is not assessed by our multiple-choice civic exercise.

What still requires confirmation

Do not make payments to this project: every guide and exercise is free. Any future registration must be checked with the official body identified in published rules.

Needs review

Organic Law 1/2026 required the Nationality Regulation to be adapted within 90 days, but the official consolidated record checked still lists 23 July 2025 as its latest amendment.
