Knowing how to count is not enough to understand an appointment, price or message. Practise numbers with a unit and a purpose: euros, minutes, day of the month or quantity. Write what you heard, confirm the unit, and repeat the information in a sentence. This helps locate the mistake without requiring you to memorise a long list at once.
The activities below are editorial suggestions using fictional situations. They do not represent an exam question sequence. You can begin with text, but later ask someone to read variants aloud. Reading a written answer trains visual recognition; understanding a spoken number requires a separate attempt without looking at the sentence.
Confirmed by official source
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
Compare oito horas, oito e meia and um quarto para as nove. The last two expressions mean 8h30 and 8h45. Um quarto para points to the following hour; meia adds thirty minutes to the stated hour. Record the two representations side by side and practise using different clocks instead of repeating only one model.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
A reunião é às três e meia da tarde.
Chegue dez minutos antes.
A que horas começa? A que horas deve chegar?
Solution and explanation: times
In the exercise, the appointment is 15h30 and the suggested arrival is 15h20. Da tarde distinguishes it from morning. If a real message is ambiguous, ask São três e meia da tarde? Confirming your interpretation is more useful than guessing. The example timetable is fictional and does not indicate the opening hours of any service.
Dates: check the weekday and month
Learn months and weekdays inside short appointment messages. Do not confuse a relative reference such as amanhã with a fixed date. A message read later may require checking when it was sent. To practise without that ambiguity, begin with an explicit day and month, then add relative expressions alongside a reference date.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
A reunião do dia dez de novembro passou para dia doze de novembro.
Qual é a nova data? Como a confirma numa frase?
Solution and explanation: dates
In the example, the new appointment is 12 November. Passou para signals a change. The 10th was the previous date rather than another option. A clear confirmation is Confirmo a reunião no dia doze de novembro. Avoid adding a weekday that was not supplied or assuming a year without sufficient information.
Prices and quantities: listen for the complete unit
When studying prices, compare euros and cêntimos and say the complete unit. Três euros e cinquenta cêntimos means 3.50 euros. Portuguese texts commonly use a comma as the decimal separator. To avoid mixing quantity and price, create two columns: how many items and how much each costs. Then describe the purchase in a simple sentence.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
Cada bilhete custa três euros e cinquenta cêntimos.
Quero dois bilhetes. Pago com dez euros.
Qual é o total? Quanto recebo de troco?
Solution and explanation: prices and quantities
In the exercise, two tickets cost seven euros altogether; paying ten gives three euros change. If you made a mistake, determine whether you misunderstood the price or calculated the total incorrectly. These are different difficulties. Use fictional prices rather than presenting them as real fares. A useful conversation question is Esse preço é por pessoa?
A listening routine with new variants
Ask someone to read three sentences containing times, dates and prices. Before listening, prepare only the column headings. Note the details, repeat the sentence, and compare with the written text at the end. Change the numbers and swap roles afterwards. Alone, you can record material for later study, but recognising your own sentence does not measure understanding of an unfamiliar voice.
Record pairs you confused, such as treze and trinta, and practise them inside a complete sentence. Do not increase reading speed before you can distinguish the detail. Once you understand a variant, add a second detail. This method is a learning suggestion; attempts, speed and results do not constitute an official level criterion.
If you missed it: ask for repetition and confirm
Practise Pode repetir, por favor?, Pode dizer mais devagar? and São quinze ou cinquenta? Choose a specific question instead of saying yes to information you did not understand. A final confirmation can combine day, time and quantity in a short sentence. This strategy helps you continue a real interaction even when one part remained unclear.
After these exercises, use our listening guide to organise sessions with new material and the A2 trainer to revisit difficulties. Keep practice connected to everyday tasks. You do not need to master every number in one session: you need to recognise the relevant detail and know how to verify it when understanding is uncertain.
