Short answer: find the detail that changes your decision
To read a Portuguese notice, first identify the decision you need to make: enter, wait, book a visit or choose transport. Then find the action, time and condition. You do not need to translate every word to understand a short message. A word such as exceto can nevertheless change the meaning of an opening-hours notice completely.
This guide offers original reading tasks using notices and short texts. The official reference describes communication skills; it does not approve these exercises or guarantee a grade. Try once without a dictionary, underline the clue supporting your answer, and only then look up vocabulary that still prevents you from understanding the practical instruction.
Confirmed by official source
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
Start with verbs and expressions telling you what to do: aguarde, retire uma senha, entrada, saída and encerrado. Compare pairs changing the action: aberto and fechado, permitido and proibido. Learn each expression inside a short situation, so that you can use it when the layout or position of the notice changes.

Atendimento apenas por marcação.
De segunda a sexta, das 9h às 17h, exceto feriados.
Posso chegar sem marcação às 14h? E ao sábado?
Solution and explanation: notices
In the example, the first sentence gives a condition for service. The second identifies an exception. The answer is no: arriving at 14h is insufficient because a visit requires an appointment. Saturday is excluded. This interpretation applies only to the fictional notice; it does not describe the actual policy of a school or public office.
Timetables: separate days, intervals
In a timetable, read headings before numbers. Dias úteis, sábado and domingo may have different columns. A time alone does not tell you which day the service operates. If there are two intervals, check for a break between them; do not automatically treat the first opening and final closing as one uninterrupted period.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
Segunda a sexta: 9h–12h e 14h–18h.
Sábado: 9h–12h. Domingo: encerrado.
Há atendimento na terça-feira às 13h? E às 15h?
Solution and explanation: timetables
For practice, choose a time within the break and another within the second interval. Explain why one allows a visit and the other does not. In the example, Tuesday at 13h is outside service hours, while 15h is inside. Only morning opening is listed for Saturday. Do not invent a timetable the text does not provide.
Messages: find the change, not just the topic
A message may mention two times: the previous one and the replacement. Look for passou para, em vez de, amanhã and hoje. Before responding, write a short line stating who, what and when. If confirmation is requested, understanding the information and sending a reply are two separate tasks you need to complete.
Original exercise: try before reading the explanation
A aula de quarta-feira passou para quinta-feira às 18h.
Por favor, confirme se pode vir.
Em que dia será a aula? O que deve responder?
Solution and explanation: messages
In the example, the lesson is Thursday at 18h rather than Wednesday. The sender requests confirmation of attendance. One possible reply is Confirmo que posso ir na quinta-feira às 18h. If you cannot attend, say so and ask a short question. Do not repeat the old date simply because it was the first detail you recognised.
How to review an error without memorising the answer
After correcting your answer, classify the mistake: unfamiliar word, confused day, ignored condition or invented detail. Copy the expression that resolved the uncertainty rather than the entire text. Then create another notice with a different day or time and try again. The changed version reveals whether you understood the relationship or merely memorised the previous solution.
Use low-risk materials such as fictional messages and study timetables. For real instructions with administrative or health consequences, confirm your interpretation with the responsible service or professional. A reading exercise cannot replace that confirmation. If the notice remains ambiguous, practise a useful question: Pode confirmar o horário, por favor?
Next practice: three texts and one explanation
Do a short session with one notice, one timetable and one message. For each text, write the action you would take and the expression justifying it. Review the logic first and vocabulary afterwards. Finish by creating a variant for another person to solve. Combine this reading with our A2 trainer and the official examples available through CAPLE.
Do not turn three correct answers into certification of your level. Observe whether you can repeat the process with new texts, explain an exception and request clarification when necessary. That observation guides the next study task: more vocabulary, more careful reading or practice writing a reply. The aim is to understand an everyday situation with increasing independence.
