Short answer: choose the support you are missing
To choose between self-study, a teacher and PLA, identify what is blocking progress: missing routine, difficulty understanding materials, little conversation or lack of feedback. The useful method addresses that need and fits your availability. There is no universal choice that works for every learner or a single route determined by nationality.
Separate learning from certification too. A teacher can help you communicate better without issuing evidence required in a procedure. A certification course may have a timetable you need to confirm. This article compares learning support; selecting language evidence is a separate question about the document and its administrative purpose rather than a ranking of teaching options.
Self-study: flexibility with a defined task
Self-study lets you organise time and revisit a particular difficulty. Make it concrete by choosing a task and a review criterion: understand a notice, write a request or answer a question. Keep the result to compare with a later attempt using new material rather than repeatedly checking a familiar answer.
Its limit appears when you cannot identify why something went wrong or continually avoid writing and speaking. Many familiar exercises can create a sense of activity without resolving the obstacle. Seek targeted feedback when a doubt recurs. You need not abandon independent learning entirely; support can be added specifically to the part that has become difficult.
A teacher: request feedback you can apply
Before choosing individual support, explain the task you want to improve and how you currently study. Ask how listening, writing and interaction will be practised, and what feedback you receive between sessions. Compare more than lesson counts: consider opportunities to practise and understand what needs to change in your own performance.
Bring a message you wrote or a conversation difficulty rather than requesting only a general classification. After the session, try again with different details. If you receive corrections without understanding how to apply them, ask for an example and another attempt. The purpose is to develop an ability you can use independently, not collect texts another person has polished for you.
PLA: check the group, route and timetable
PLA can provide a supported route and certification at the levels described by AIMA. Evaluate the actual offer by checking entry level, timetable, location or delivery mode, completion conditions and final document. A general description does not establish whether a particular group fits your routine or currently has places available.
Ask how participation works if you do shift work or need support with the writing system. Do not assume every condition can be adapted. When a reply confirms an incompatibility, seek another offer or introductory support while waiting. Choosing a group you can attend is essential to the decision, even when there is no tuition charge.
AIMA’s FAQ identifies A1 + A2 and B1 + B2 certification through PLA courses, under the CEFR.

Last checked:Combine methods with a division of tasks
You can use independent study for vocabulary revision, a supported session for writing and speaking, and a class for continuity. The combination need not be complicated. Write down what each part adds, and remove activities that duplicate the same work without addressing the difficulty you selected as your priority.
For example, after studying an information-request situation, practise with someone who asks new questions. Record the difficulty, review expressions and try another situation. This editorial learning cycle carries no guaranteed progression deadline. Adjust the load to what you can maintain and leave room for meaningful review, rather than simply increasing the number of resources you open each week.
A decision you can revisit using evidence
Choose an initial task and observe it again after several sessions using different material. Ask whether you understand more, need less support or can ask a question you previously avoided. An observable change helps decide whether to keep the method, adjust one part or seek another form of support.
The original template below organises that decision without creating an official score. If certification is part of your goal, keep a separate line for confirming the document and purpose. Learning can improve while that administrative question remains unresolved. You do not need to choose one method forever; you need to identify the next step that addresses your current difficulty.
