Short answer: find an offer and confirm with the provider
To find a PLA course, AIMA advises searching for Português Língua de Acolhimento in the training-offer portal and contacting the school, training centre or Qualifica centre. A search result is not a reserved place. Confirm that the group is open, what level it covers, its timetable and which enrolment documents the provider requests.
If your goal is A2 certification, explain that in the first contact. Ask which level will be printed on the final certificate and who issues it. This guide organises the search and provides a message template. It does not maintain a live vacancy list or guarantee that a suitable course is available near you. Checking availability is part of the process, not an unnecessary extra step.

Before searching: write down four practical constraints
Write down where you can study, which days you are available, your Portuguese starting point and why you need a certificate. For example: near work; after 6 pm; I can read simple notices; I need to clarify an A2 proof route. This helps the provider respond concretely and avoids a long exchange of messages that never establishes whether the course fits.
Do not mistake a preference for an official entitlement. Evening hours, distance learning or a quick completion date may not exist in your area. Decide which conditions you can adjust and which would make attendance impossible. That is more effective than sending the same vague request to many providers. Include travel time and your work pattern when deciding what a sustainable timetable looks like.
How to distinguish PLA, informal lessons and exam preparation
Some offers help you communicate better without promising PLA certification. Others prepare you for CIPLE but require a separate exam booking at the end. Both can have educational value. The difficulty arises when someone assumes that any advertisement mentioning Portuguese A2 automatically provides the same document. Learning goals and evidence goals need to be identified separately.
Read the offer and request confirmation of the certification route. Check whether it names the final level, issuer and assessment. If your sole goal is learning, teaching quality and suitability may guide your choice. If you need documentary evidence, add certificate and procedural checks to that comparison. Keep the written reply rather than relying on a phrase from an advertisement that may describe only the intended study level.

AIMA’s FAQ identifies A1 + A2 and B1 + B2 certification through PLA courses, under the CEFR.
AIMA's guidance describes the target group and lists documentary routes for enrolment. Do not assume that having no residence card automatically rules out every possibility: the guidance identifies other documents. At the same time, being able to ask for information does not mean that enrolment will be accepted without any documentation. Read the official list instead of relying on a second-hand summary.
Open the official FAQ and describe your documentary situation to the provider. Ask which listed route they accept in your case. At this stage, do not send passport scans, tax details or document photographs to an unverified contact. First check that you are communicating with the responsible school or centre through a contact published by that institution. This is a practical precaution for handling a course enquiry, not a substitute for its enrolment rules.

AIMA’s FAQ describes a target group aged 16 or above and several enrolment-document options, including a residence title, evidence of procedures, protection or NISS; the situation and document should be confirmed with the provider.
Are they free? Separate tuition and participation costs
AIMA says the large majority of courses are free, depending on the provider and funding. Ask explicitly whether tuition, enrolment, materials, assessment or certificate issuance involves a charge. A statement that lessons are free does not automatically clarify every related service. You can ask these questions before providing detailed documents or committing to a timetable.
Even without tuition fees, travel, meals and time away from work may affect participation. Compare two offers by whether you can attend and complete them, not only by whether they are free. If payment is requested, ask for a written description and confirm the receiving institution before proceeding. This guide does not publish a universal price because the official guidance itself includes provider and funding conditions.

Use the template as a starting point and add only details needed for an initial answer. You do not need to include document numbers or a complete account of your residence procedure. State your real availability and ask for confirmation about A2 so that the reply addresses your learning and certification needs. Replace the bracketed text before sending it.
This is an original editorial example, not an official enrolment form. After a reply, you may need to complete the provider's own form and supply the documents it specifies. Keep the message and answer together so you do not have to repeat questions already resolved. The first enquiry aims to establish suitability and availability; it does not reserve a place or replace a provider's registration steps.
Original example in Portuguese
Assunto: Informações sobre curso PLA A2
Bom dia,
Obrigado/a.
If there are no places: plan a useful next step
Ask whether there is a waiting list, another class or another centre that can provide information. Treat a proposed date as an estimate until the provider confirms it. Avoid replacing a suitable learning route with a promise of an immediate certificate simply because the first organisation you contacted had no vacancy. Availability and suitability are different questions.
While searching, practise one small task each day: understand a message, read a notice, write a question and answer aloud. Our A2 exercises support that study and do not certify a level. A short routine helps you arrive with clearer questions and make better use of lessons when a compatible offer becomes available. Keep a note of contacts and replies rather than restarting the search from memory each week.
